The Salpalinja was Finland's enormous eastern defensive line, built during the Second World War as a barrier against another Soviet attack. Around Salla, scattered remains of the line make the wider border story visible in the landscape.
Do not expect a polished fortress museum. The value is in seeing concrete, stone, and earthworks in a place where the border was not an abstraction. Combine this stop with the war museum in the village for context.
