Salla works best if you treat it as a nature base with a history lesson attached. Spend one day around the national park and reindeer park, then use a second day for the museum, fortifications, and a short trail or winter activity.
Distances are large and public transport is thin. A car makes the difference between seeing only the village and actually understanding why travelers come this far east.
