The French Basque coast and the Spanish border are compact enough that several excellent day trips are easy from Biarritz. Bayonne, 10 minutes north, has a beautiful Gothic cathedral and the Musée Basque, and is the ham capital of France. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 20 minutes south, is a pretty harbour town with good beaches and some of the best pintxos bars outside Spain. San Sebastián (Donostia) across the border in Spain is about an hour's drive and makes a full day trip — one of Europe's finest food cities.
