Day Trips

Argeles-sur-Mer is well placed for day trips along the coast and into the Pyrenees. Perpignan is just 20 minutes north by car and makes a natural first outing, with its mix of French, Spanish, and Catalan architecture, including the Cathedrale St-Jean. From Perpignan you can also catch trains to other parts of France and into Spain.

South along the coast, the fishing village of Collioure is a short drive away and well worth the trip for its harbour, Matisse connections, and anchovy tradition. Further south, the road crosses into Spain and reaches the Costa Brava.

The Musee d'Art Moderne in Ceret, about 30 km inland, was co-founded by Picasso and Matisse and houses an excellent collection of 20th-century art. The town itself, nestled in the foothills, is charming and makes for a good half-day visit.
