Réserve Naturelle du Mas Larrieu

Protected coastal dune and reedbed reserve at the mouth of the Tech river

A small but precious nature reserve protecting one of the last sections of natural coastline between the Pyrenees and the Camargue: a strip of dunes, reedbeds and Mediterranean pinewoods at the mouth of the Tech river, just north of Argelès beach. The site supports a varied bird population — egrets, kingfishers, marsh harriers — and a patchwork of Mediterranean flora that has otherwise mostly disappeared under campsites and apartment blocks.

A network of marked trails leads through the dunes to the beach; the reserve is open year round and free to enter. Spring (April–June) is the best time for birds and flowers. Cycle paths from Argelès town reach the reserve in about 15 minutes; on foot it's a half-hour walk along the beach. Combine with the Plage Nord and a long sandy walk back south.
