The great fortress of Angers dominates the city from a rocky bluff above the river Maine. Built after 1230 by Blanche de Castille and expanded by her son Louis IX, its seventeen massive towers encircle a curtain wall nearly half a kilometre long. Inside, the castle's greatest treasure is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse — a 14th-century series of panels stretching over 100 metres, depicting scenes from the Book of Revelation. It is the largest surviving medieval tapestry in the world.
