Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers

Fine arts museum in a Renaissance mansion with medieval to 20th-century collections

Address 14 rue du Musée, Angers

The Musée des Beaux-Arts occupies the Logis Barrault, a late 15th-century mansion near the cathedral that is itself worth seeing before you even look at the collections. The permanent holdings run from medieval religious art through the Italian Renaissance to 19th-century French painting, with a particularly strong representation of works from the Anjou region.

The museum underwent a major renovation and its presentation is clear and well-considered. The medieval sculptures and painted panels on the ground floor are the most distinctive part of the collection — not material you will find in any equivalent museum in Paris. The upper floors cover the standard European painting canon from the 17th century onward, with some good Dutch and Flemish works alongside the French holdings.
