Vieux Tours

The Vieux Tours is the medieval west of the centre, the area around Place Plumereau, the Tour Charlemagne, and the Hôtel Goüin. It is the most photographed neighbourhood in the city, a tight grid of pedestrian lanes lined with half-timbered houses, restaurants, and bars.

Beyond Plumereau itself, the best streets are Rue du Grand Marché, Rue Briçonnet, Rue de la Rôtisserie, and Place Foire-le-Roi. Mornings and early afternoons are the time to wander and look at the architecture; evenings are for the bars. The whole quarter was carefully restored in the 1970s after decades of neglect and is now firmly the social heart of the city.
