Monument to Carrier Pigeons

A quiet memorial to the thousands of Allied pigeons killed in service during the First World War

This small bronze monument, located in a garden near the city centre, honours the carrier pigeons that served Allied forces during the First World War — an easily overlooked memorial to a category of war dead that rarely features in official commemorations. Pigeons were essential to military communication before reliable radio: they carried messages across front lines under shellfire and poison gas, and the mortality rate among messenger pigeons on the Western Front was significant.

The statue depicts a pigeon in flight, a message capsule attached to its leg. It is a quiet, sentimental piece that rewards a moment's reflection, particularly given Lille's own wartime history — the city was occupied by Germany from October 1914 to October 1918, during which the civilian population endured severe privations and several organised resistance networks used various methods, including pigeons, to communicate with Allied forces. The monument is small enough to miss but worth seeking out as part of a walk through the southern city centre.
