Opéra de Lille

Neoclassical opera house from 1923, one of the grandest in northern France

The Opéra de Lille stands on the Place du Théâtre, a short walk from the Grand'Place, its neoclassical façade of columns, allegorical figures, and green copper dome creating one of the more distinguished streetscapes in the city centre. It was built from 1907 to 1913 and inaugurated in 1923 after delays caused by the First World War, during which German forces occupied the city and used the building as a storage depot.

The opera house stages a full season of opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts from September through June. Ticket prices are substantially lower than Paris equivalents, and the programme is ambitious — the Opéra de Lille has a reputation for adventurous programming and high production standards relative to its budget. Standing tickets and reduced-price late availability make it accessible. The building is also worth visiting simply for the architecture: the grand foyer and auditorium are open during performances and guided visits are organised by the tourist office in summer.
