The Recouvrance neighbourhood occupies the right bank of the Penfeld, across the water from the main commercial centre of Brest. It is the most historically layered part of the city — partly because it sits within the military zone and partly because it escaped the worst of the wartime destruction. The older streets around the Rue Saint-Malo and the Rue de la Porte have a rougher, more authentic quality than the rebuilt left bank.
Recouvrance was traditionally the neighbourhood of sailors, dockworkers, and the rougher end of Brest's working-class life. The convict prison (bagne) that operated until 1858 was based nearby, and the social character of the area — working class, maritime, somewhat apart from the bourgeois left bank — has persisted even as the population has changed. The neighbourhood has seen some gentrification in recent years, with artists' studios and independent cafes moving in alongside the traditional residents.
