Le Volcan — Espace Oscar Niemeyer

Oscar Niemeyer's extraordinary cultural centre — a concrete volcano in the city centre

In the middle of the Perret grid, rising like a concrete eruption from the city's largest square, is the Espace Oscar Niemeyer — universally known as "Le Volcan." The complex, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1982, consists of two buildings: the Grand Volcan (a large performance hall housed in an inverted cone) and the Petit Volcan (a smaller cone containing the municipal library). The juxtaposition with Perret's strict horizontals is both jarring and exhilarating.

The Grand Volcan is one of Le Havre's main performing arts venues, hosting theatre, dance, and music. The library inside the Petit Volcan is one of the most extraordinary spaces to sit and read in any French city — a curving interior bathed in natural light. Even if you're not attending a performance, the exterior of both buildings is worth seeing as an example of late modernism at its most self-confident.

Address: Place Oscar Niemeyer, 76000 Le Havre.

A story
Oscar Niemeyer designed the Espace Oscar Niemeyer in 1978, and the building was completed in 1982. Niemeyer was already in his 70s and at the height of his fame from Brasília. He reportedly designed the main performance hall to look like an inverted volcanic cone as a deliberate riposte to Perret's grid — a Brazilian gesture against French order. Le Havre embraced it. The building is now listed as a historic monument.
