Ozurgeti is the small capital of Guria, a green, humid corner of western Georgia between the Black Sea and the Lesser Caucasus. It is not as immediately rewarding as Batumi, but it gives a more local look at Guria: tea, old churches, market-town life, and wooded hills rising just beyond the streets.
The town itself has a museum, theatre, and remains of old bathhouses, but the better reasons to come are just outside it. Shemokmedi Monastery, Likhauri Church, and the Ekvtime Takaishvili Museum make a good half-day loop if you have a car or patient taxi driver.
Ozurgeti is best treated as a base for Guria rather than a checklist city. If you are already travelling the Black Sea Coast and want to understand the region behind the beaches, it is worth the detour.
