Laberbergbahn

The Laberbergbahn is a small two-person gondola that climbs from the eastern edge of the village to the 1,684-metre summit of the Laber. The cabins are short on creature comfort — open, slow, and dangling rather alarmingly above the rocks — which is part of the appeal.

At the top a sun terrace and modest mountain restaurant look out across the Ammergau Alps to the Zugspitze massif. In winter the Laber is one of Bavaria's steepest ski descents, recommended only for confident skiers; in summer it is the easy way to a high-Alpine view without the hike up the Kofel. Service runs most of the year but check timetables outside peak season.
