Shopping in Oberammergau means woodcarving. The village has been a centre of religious carving since the Middle Ages and dozens of workshops still operate, most of them on or near Dorfstrasse. Prices run from twenty-euro souvenir figures up to four-figure full-scale nativity sets.
Beyond carvings, look out for reverse-glass painting (Hinterglasmalerei), traditional Trachten clothing, locally cured cheeses, and herbal liqueurs from Ettal Abbey nearby. The Pilatushaus workshop is the most reliable place to find pieces being made in front of you. Most shops close on Sunday and many take an early-afternoon break midweek in the off-season.
