Oberammergau makes an unusually good base for the southern Bavarian Alps. Ettal Abbey with its Baroque rotunda is a four-kilometre walk or short bus ride. Schloss Linderhof, Ludwig II's most personal palace, is ten kilometres south through the wooded valley. Garmisch-Partenkirchen — the cog railway to the Zugspitze and the Partnach Gorge — is half an hour by bus or train. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are an hour west via Füssen, best done early to beat the day-trippers from Munich.
