The former Jesuit church of the Holy Cross sits on a small terrace above the old town, just inside the medieval walls. Built between 1752 and 1754, it is a deceptively plain barn from the outside, with a low domed crossing — but the interior carries a swirling Cosmas Damian Asam style ceiling fresco of the Glorification of the Cross.
The Jesuit order was suppressed in Bavaria in 1773, only twenty years after the church opened; the interior decoration was never quite finished, and the building has the slightly arrested air of a baroque project cut short. The view from the terrace outside, down the steep alleys to the river, is the best of any vantage point in the old town outside the Bayertor itself.
