Landsberg's town museum occupies the former Jesuit college on Von-Helfenstein-Gasse, a tall whitewashed building just above the Hauptplatz. The collection covers the town's history from Roman traces to the present, with a particular strength in religious art — wooden saints from the surrounding villages, Gothic altarpieces saved from suppressed monasteries, paintings by Hubert von Herkomer.
The 20th-century rooms touch carefully on the years when Hitler was imprisoned in the local fortress, on the satellite camps of Dachau that operated in Kaufering nearby, and on the war crimes trials at Landsberg Prison after 1945. It is not a flinching account.
Tuesday to Sunday afternoons; closed Mondays.
