Late-Gothic parish church with a baroque interior

The Parish Church of the Assumption, just behind the Hauptplatz, is a tall late-Gothic hall church begun in 1458 by Matthäus von Ensingen — the same architect family responsible for Bern and Strasbourg cathedrals. The exterior is severe red brick with a green copper steeple; the interior is a different story, with three centuries of accumulated baroque and rococo fittings filling the Gothic shell.

The main altar by Lorenz Luidl features a sculpted Assumption of the Virgin floating in clouds above the tabernacle; the carved choir stalls and the pulpit are notable Bavarian baroque work. A 1430 wooden Madonna in the south aisle is the church's oldest survival.

Open daily; quiet outside service times. The bells ring the hour across the old town and can be heard from the Hauptplatz cafe terraces.
