Schmalzturm

13th-century lard-gate tower, oldest of Landsberg's defences

The slim, four-sided tower at the northern corner of the Hauptplatz is the oldest piece of Landsberg's medieval fortifications still standing — built around 1300 as part of the first inner ring of walls. Its odd name comes from the medieval tradition of using it to store the town's reserve of lard (Schmalz), kept cold by the thick stone walls.

Crowned by a 1370s slate spire and a small Madonna in a niche, the Schmalzturm makes a fine vertical accent at the corner of the square. It is closed to visitors but visible from every angle of the Hauptplatz cafes.
