Artists' Necropolis

The Künstler-Nekropole (Artists' Necropolis) is a small woodland cemetery in the Habichtswald above the city — a unique conceptual art project where artists design their own graves and are then buried beneath them. The site contains a couple of dozen completed works set among the trees, ranging from minimalist stone slabs to elaborate symbolic structures.

It is a quiet, slightly otherworldly place. The walk in from the nearest car park takes ten minutes through forest; an information board at the entrance lists the artists and the year of each piece. Open at all times, free, and best visited in mid-morning when the light filters through the trees. Bring proper shoes — the paths are uneven.

A story
Founded by Harry Kramer in 1981, the Necropolis invites internationally known artists to design their own gravestones — and to be buried beneath them. About twenty plots have been used so far. The result is an outdoor sculpture park whose pieces are also tombs and whose visitors include the relatives of the dead.
