Museum of Sepulchral Culture

The Museum für Sepulkralkultur is one of those uniquely German museums that pursues a single niche to its limit. Its subject: the culture of death, burial, mourning, and memorial across European history. The collection ranges from medieval ossuaries and Baroque memento mori to modern crematorium architecture and AIDS quilts.

It is more thoughtful than morbid — the exhibits explore how different generations have answered the same questions about death — and it is unusual enough to be worth an hour or two for any traveller curious about the less obvious corners of European culture. The building, an old riding hall behind the Henschelpark, is itself worth a look. Free admission on Sunday mornings.
