St Martin's Church

The Martinskirche is Kassel's main Protestant church, a Gothic basilica begun in 1364. The building was very heavily damaged in the bombing of October 1943, when British raids destroyed something like 80 percent of central Kassel. The post-war rebuilding kept the medieval stone shell and added a modern brick-and-concrete interior — a brave, distinctive choice rather than a conservative restoration.

The result is a striking contrast: medieval Gothic walls and a deliberately stripped-down 1950s interior with a large modern stained-glass window. The graves of Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous and his wife are preserved at the eastern end. Free entry; open daily.
