New Gallery (Neue Galerie)

The Neue Galerie picks up where the Wilhelmshöhe Picture Gallery's Old Masters leave off — its collection runs from the 18th century through to the present. The strongest sections are German Romantics, late-19th-century realists, the Expressionists (Beckmann is a particular strength), and contemporary art including key works from past documentas.

The galleries hold around 800 paintings and a much larger collection of works on paper and sculpture, shown in rotating displays. The building is a fine neoclassical pile on the Schöne Aussicht (a terrace with a Fulda valley view that lives up to its name). A natural pairing with the Hessian State Museum just down the street.
