The main beach runs along the entire seventeen-kilometre north side of the island, but the most-used section sits directly above the village, between the lifeguard station and the Pavillon. Pale, fine sand, gentle dunes behind, and the long flat North Sea in front — at low tide the water retreats almost out of sight and the beach widens to several hundred metres.
The beach is divided into supervised and unsupervised sections; the supervised stretch operates from late May to early September. Strandkörbe — the wicker hooded chairs you see all along this coast — can be hired by the day or the week from a beach concession east of the lifeguard tower. The further east or west you walk from the village, the emptier it gets, until you are alone on the sand.
