Betzenberg Wildlife Park

The Wildpark am Betzenberg is a free-admission wildlife park on the wooded Betzenberg hill, adjacent to the Fritz Walter Stadium. The park occupies a large area of natural forest and houses native European species in large, semi-natural enclosures. It is particularly good for families with children — the animals are often visible at close range, and the forest setting makes the walk itself pleasant even if wildlife proves elusive.

The park is open year-round and free to enter, which makes it one of Kaiserslautern's most visited attractions. It is well maintained and the enclosures are spacious by the standards of small zoological parks. Red deer, wild boar, and roe deer are the most reliably visible species.

A story
The wildlife park was founded in 1970 with a specific mission: to show local residents animals that once lived in the Palatinate Forest but are no longer found there. The species on display — wild boar, red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, and European bison — are all native to this part of Germany. Some, like the bison, were regionally extinct for centuries before reintroduction programmes began. The park is essentially a living catalogue of what the forest used to contain.
