The Elf Freunde Kreisel is a traffic roundabout on the road toward the Fritz Walter Stadion, decorated with eleven larger-than-life concrete footballer figures in action poses. The sculpture captures the moment of a football match — players heading, shooting, tackling — and the effect, seen from a moving car, is oddly compelling.
It is an unusual example of public art that is entirely specific to its place: this sculpture could only exist in Kaiserslautern, a city where football is not a pastime but a central component of civic identity. Whether it qualifies as great art is a matter of taste, but it is certainly memorable.
