Humberg Tower

The Humberg Tower stands on the 425-metre Humberg hill to the south of Kaiserslautern, reached by a pleasant walk through the Palatinate Forest from the edge of the city. The tower itself, built in 1890, is an observation tower in the historicist style typical of late nineteenth-century Wilhelmine monuments — square stone base, decorative upper level, viewing platform at the top.

The walk up to the tower through the forest is the real attraction. From the tower the views extend across the Palatinate and, on clear days, toward the Rhine plain. It is a popular Sunday destination for Kaiserslautern families and gives a good sense of the extent of the Palatinate Forest.

A story
The Humberg Tower was built in 1890 as a Kaiser Wilhelm monument — one of hundreds of such towers built across Germany in the decades following unification. Most have been demolished or fallen into disrepair. This one survives because the Humberg hill, 425 metres above sea level, remains a popular walking destination, and the tower provides a viewing platform that on a clear day reaches to the Rhine valley and the Vosges.
