Pfalztheater

The Pfalztheater is the state theatre of the Palatinate, presenting opera, ballet, and drama performances from September to June. The company includes resident ensembles for all three disciplines, which is unusual for a city of Kaiserslautern's size and reflects the regional government's investment in cultural infrastructure.

The opera productions are generally well-regarded, and the theatre has a loyal local audience. Tickets are considerably cheaper than at major German opera houses and availability is better — a worthwhile option if you happen to be in town when something appealing is on. The theatre's bar opens before performances and at interval.

A story
The Pfalztheater was rebuilt after being heavily damaged in the Second World War. The current building, from the 1960s, is not architecturally distinguished, but the company inside it — with ensembles for opera, dance, and spoken theatre — has a strong reputation. The theatre serves as the cultural flagship for the entire Palatinate region, and its programme draws from across the repertoire rather than playing safe.
