Castle Trifels

Castle Trifels stands above Annweiler in the Palatinate Forest and is one of the region's most important medieval castles. Richard the Lionheart was held here after his capture on the way back from the Third Crusade, and the castle was also used to safeguard the imperial regalia.

The rebuilt fortress is worth the trip for both the history and the views over the forested hills. It makes a strong day trip from Landau, especially if combined with a walk in the surrounding Palatinate Forest.
