The Rathausplatz is the heart of Landau's old town, a pleasant square surrounded by cafes, the town hall, and a mix of historic buildings from the French and German periods. The town hall itself is a graceful neoclassical structure, its architecture shaped by Landau's decades as a French garrison city.
The square is a good place to sit with a glass of Palatinate wine and take stock of the town. Street markets run here on weekdays, and the square comes alive in summer evenings when the outdoor cafe tables fill up. From the Rathausplatz, it's a short walk to the Stiftskirche, the fortification remnants, and the pedestrian zone.
