Kornhaus

The Kornhaus sits on the western bank of the Elbe about three kilometres north of the city centre — a low, curved restaurant-and-dance-pavilion that Carl Fieger (a member of the Gropius office) designed in 1929–30. It is the most relaxed of the Dessau Bauhaus buildings: wide terraced windows look out over the river, the circular dance floor opens onto a riverside terrace, and the whole thing has the feel of a building designed for pleasure rather than pedagogy.

Like the Bauhaus Building and Meisterhäuser it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike them, it still functions as a restaurant and event venue, which makes it a rare case of being able to eat inside a listed modernist monument. The riverside setting is the best in Dessau — there are benches outside, the Elbe is wide here, and on a warm afternoon it is a genuinely fine place to sit.

Worth visiting even if you don't eat there. The exterior is best appreciated from the terrace, where you can see the curve of the building and its relationship to the river.
