St Mary's Church is Dessau's main historic church, a late Gothic building from the early sixteenth century. It is not the reason most travellers come to Dessau, but it gives the city centre an older anchor beyond the Bauhaus story.
Outside stands a statue of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau, the Prussian field marshal better known as the Old Dessauer. The church makes an easy stop while moving between the centre, the Bauhaus Museum, and the parks.
