Meisterhäuser

A short walk north of the Bauhaus Building, the Meisterhäuser are a row of semi-detached houses Gropius designed for the school's master teachers. Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy, and Lyonel Feininger all lived here during the Dessau years, and the cluster feels both domestic and experimental — flat roofs, large windows, simple white volumes, interiors that put the Bauhaus workshop output on display in a lived context.

Several of the houses are open as museums. The interiors have been carefully reconstructed: the Klee and Kandinsky house shows period furnishings and artwork, while the Moholy-Nagy house is more sparsely presented. Gropius's own house (the Direktorenhaus) was destroyed in the war; a striking contemporary steel-and-glass structure now marks its footprint.

The whole ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the main Bauhaus Building and Kornhaus. Give it at least ninety minutes.
