Heraklion Archaeological Museum

World's finest Minoan collection, from Knossos and beyond

Address Xanthoudidou 2, Iraklion
Admission €12 (combined ticket with Knossos €16)
Opening Hours Daily 8:00am–8:00pm (reduced hours Nov–Mar)

The finest collection of Minoan art and artifacts in the world. This is the single best reason to spend a day in Iraklion. The museum holds almost everything excavated from Knossos and the major Minoan sites across Crete: the famous bull-leaping fresco, the Snake Goddess figurines, the Phaistos Disc, and thousands of seal stones, Linear A tablets, and clay vessels that document 2,000 years of Minoan civilisation.

The museum reopened after a decade-long renovation in 2023 with a completely reorganised layout that is much easier to follow. Allow at least two hours; three if you read the labels.

A story
The Phaistos Disc — a clay disc stamped with 241 symbols in a spiral pattern — remains undeciphered. Found in 1908 at the palace of Phaistos in southern Crete, it has been studied by linguists for over a century without result. Whether it is a prayer, a list, or a game board is genuinely unknown.
