A good museum covering Cretan history from early Christian times to the 20th century — the period that the Archaeological Museum doesn't cover. Highlights include two paintings by El Greco (who was born in Crete before moving to Spain), a reconstruction of the study of Nikos Kazantzakis, and a strong collection of Byzantine icons and frescoes. The Battle of Crete section (1941) is well presented and sobering.
Less visited than the Archaeological Museum but worth an hour and a half for anyone interested in the Byzantine and Venetian periods of Cretan history.
