Archaeological Museum of Sitia

The Archaeological Museum of Sitia is small but holds one of the most important regional collections on Crete, focused on the Minoan and post-Minoan finds of eastern Lasithi. The standout is the Palaikastro Kouros, but there are also fine Linear A tablets, Mochlos jewellery, and bronze figurines from Petras.

The building sits on the southern edge of town on the road to Ierapetra. Allow an hour. Closed Tuesdays. The labels are in Greek and English and the exhibits are well lit.

A story
The most famous object here is the Palaikastro Kouros, a small ivory-and-gold figure of a young man dated to around 1500 BC. It was found smashed in fragments — apparently deliberately destroyed — and pieced back together by Cretan archaeologists in the 1990s.
