Philippi is one of northern Greece's great archaeological sites, and an easy day trip from Drama. The ruins bring together Macedonian foundations, Roman urban planning, early Christian basilicas, a theatre, and the memory of the Battle of Philippi, where the Roman Republic's last civil-war chapter turned decisively toward empire.
The site is broad, sun-exposed, and best visited with water, a hat, and enough time to connect the pieces. For many travellers, the early Christian layer is just as important as the classical one, because Philippi is linked to the apostle Paul and the first Christian community in Europe. It is a far stronger excursion than its quiet rural setting suggests.
