Getting Around

In summer (roughly June–September), a tourist shuttle bus runs a loop through the Meteora complex several times a day, stopping at all six monasteries. This is the easiest way to cover all the sites without a car. The bus departs from Kalambaka's main square; timetables are posted at the station and in guesthouses.

Outside the summer season, taxis are the main alternative to walking. A taxi will take you to the top of the complex and wait while you visit one monastery, then drive on to the next — agree on a price in advance. The full circuit by taxi takes two to three hours and is a reasonable option in cooler months when the walking between sites is pleasant.

Cycling is popular in spring and autumn. Bikes can be hired in Kalambaka, and the circuit through the rocks is enjoyable though there is significant climbing involved. The road through the Meteora is narrow in places and shared with tour buses in summer — early morning is the best time to cycle.

Walking between all six active monasteries takes a full day if you also spend time inside. Many people walk to the first couple of monasteries, then take the bus or a taxi to the ones further away.
