Kalambaka exists almost entirely to serve visitors coming to see the Meteora — and that is exactly as it should be. The six active monasteries perched on sheer sandstone pillars are among the most dramatic sights in Greece, and exploring them takes the better part of two full days. Beyond the monasteries, the town has a Byzantine church, decent hiking between the rocks, and excellent sunset-watching spots above the Thessaly plain.
