Lamia's position in central Greece puts several major sites within easy day-trip distance. Delphi is about 80 kilometres to the southwest, an easy drive through the mountains and one of the great ancient sites in the world. Meteora, with its monasteries perched on improbable rock pinnacles, is around 90 kilometres north via Kalambaka. The mountain town of Karpenisi, in the Agrafa highlands to the west, is a popular destination for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
For those with an interest in WWII history, the Gorgopotamos viaduct (scene of the 1942 SOE sabotage operation) is reachable as a short trip south of Lamia, and can be combined with a visit to the village of Ipati and its Ottoman-era mosque.
