The social life of Mytilini plays out in public. The long promenade along the south harbour fills from mid-morning with people nursing coffees and watching the ferries; by evening the same chairs are occupied by ouzo drinkers. The Epano Skala area around the north harbour has the youngest scene — bars that stay open until the early hours in summer. The city has a lively student population from the University of the Aegean, which keeps prices reasonable and the music varied.
