Lesbos is large enough to reward multiple day trips from Mytilini. The road south leads to Plomari, the ouzo capital, in about 45 minutes. West across the island (1.5–2 hours) takes you to Skala Kalloni and the gulf wetlands, excellent for birdwatching, and beyond that to the fishing villages and volcanic beaches of the west coast. North on the main road, Mandamados offers a remarkable monastery and a living pottery tradition. The entire island is accessible as a day trip from Mytilini, though the far west is best done with a two-night stay in Sigri or Molyvos.
