Museum of Tériade

Stratis Eleftheriadis — who published under the name Tériade — was born in Mytilene in 1889 and went on to become one of the most influential art publishers in Paris. He was the driving force behind the journals Minotaure and Verve, and worked closely with Matisse, Picasso, Léger, Chagall, and Miró. His museum in Varia, next to the Theophilos Museum, displays original lithographs and engravings from those collaborations — Matisse's Jazz series, Chagall's illustrated Bible, works by Giacometti and Laurens. It is a remarkable collection to find in a suburban village on a Greek island, a direct result of one man's improbable trajectory from Mytilene to the centre of European modernism.
