Lefkada is the only Greek island you can drive to, and the link to the mainland is a strangely satisfying piece of engineering: a pontoon bridge across the narrow lagoon channel at the north end of the island. It swings open every hour to let yachts through, briefly halting traffic on either side.
In high season the bridge can produce serious traffic jams in both directions. Cyclists and pedestrians can cross at any time without waiting.
