SS Hellas Liberty

A rare survivor of the wartime Liberty ship fleet, the SS Hellas Liberty (originally the SS Arthur M. Huddell) is moored on the main harbour and open as a museum. You can walk the entire vessel — engine room, holds, bridge, crew quarters — and see how an emergency-build cargo ship of 1943 actually felt.

The museum tells the story of Greek shipping after the war, when Greek shipowners bought 100 surplus Libertys from the US and rebuilt their merchant fleet from scratch.

A story
Of the 2,710 Liberty ships built in the United States during the Second World War, only three survive — and Hellas Liberty is the only one outside the United States. After the war the US sold the ship to Greek owners, where it served as a tanker for decades before being repatriated as a museum in 2008.
