Hellenic Maritime Museum

Set on the edge of the Zea Marina, the Hellenic Maritime Museum charts Greek seafaring from prehistory to the present. Sections cover ancient triremes, the Byzantine fleet, the Greek War of Independence, and the two world wars, with detailed model ships, paintings, and salvaged hardware.

Outside, the conning tower of the Second World War submarine Papanikolis stands beside the building. Allow an hour and a half; combine with a walk around Zea Marina afterwards.

A story
The museum's prize exhibit is a section of the conning tower of the submarine Papanikolis, which sank seven enemy ships during the Second World War — including a German destroyer in the Aegean — earning it more confirmed kills than any other Greek vessel in modern history.
