Archaeological Museum of Skyros

The Archaeological Museum sits near the central square in Skyros Town and was inaugurated in 1973, though its collection had been assembled for a decade before that. The finds come primarily from excavations at Palamari, a Bronze Age settlement on the northern coast that was occupied from around 2800 BCE and shows evidence of trade connections across the early Aegean world.

The museum is compact — a single morning is enough — but the Palamari material is genuinely interesting, showing that Skyros was not the isolated backwater it sometimes appears. Mycenaean pottery, figurines, and the architectural layout of Palamari (visible at the site itself, a short drive away) tell of a sophisticated community that predates classical Greek civilization by well over a thousand years.
