Festetics Palace

Festetics Palace is Keszthely's set-piece attraction: a long Baroque residence with formal gardens, museum rooms, and one of the most beautiful historic libraries in Hungary. The palace grew from the 18th century onward as the Festetics family turned Keszthely into a cultural centre at the western end of Lake Balaton.

The interiors are more interesting than the usual aristocratic furniture parade because the library, carriage displays, and family collections give the building a real sense of use. Allow at least two hours if you want to see the palace properly and walk the park. In summer, go early before tour groups thicken around the entrance.

A story
The Festetics family built one of Hungary's great aristocratic libraries here, and the Helikon Library survived wars and regime changes with its carved oak fittings and tens of thousands of volumes intact. It is the room that best explains why Keszthely feels more cultivated than most Balaton resort towns.
