Martonvásár

Beethoven-linked Hungarian town centred on the Brunszvik palace and its park.

Martonvásár is a small town in Fejér County, about half an hour southwest of Budapest by train. Its reason to stop is clear: the Brunszvik estate, where a white neo-Gothic palace stands in a protected park and keeps the memory of Ludwig van Beethoven's friendship with the Brunszvik family.

This is not a town for a long stay, but it makes a neat cultural day trip. The palace complex combines the Beethoven Memorial Museum, the Agroverzum Science Adventure Center, and the old palace garden into one easy visit. A short walk away, the Nursery School Museum tells the unusual story of Teréz Brunszvik, who founded the first kindergarten in Hungary.

Martonvásár works best if you like small, focused places: one estate, one strong story, and enough green space to slow the day down.
